• Surrogate-Assisted Genetic Programming with Phenotypic Characterisation in Dynamic Multi-Mode Project Scheduling

Yuan Tian, Yi Mei, Mengjie Zhang · 15 September 2026

Dynamic multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling requires decisions to be made under precedence constraints, limited resources, multiple execution modes, and uncertain activity durations. Genetic programming (GP) can automatically evolve heuristic rules for such problems, but its simulatio…

• Petri Net Induced Heuristic Search for Resource Constrained Scheduling

Ido Lublin, Dor Atzmon, Izack Cohen · 18 May 2026

We formulate the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) as optimal search over the reachability graph of a Timed Transition Petri Net with Resources, using relative-delay tokens so that scheduling decisions correspond to transition firings in the induced state space. We solve the re…

• Surrogate-Assisted Genetic Programming with Rank-Based Phenotypic Characterisation for Dynamic Multi-Mode Project Scheduling

Yuan Tian, Yi Mei, Mengjie Zhang · 18 March 2026

The dynamic multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem (DMRCPSP) is of practical importance, as it requires making real-time decisions under changing project states and resource availability. Genetic Programming (GP) has been shown to effectively evolve heuristic rules for such decis…

• Optimizing Task Completion Time Updates Using POMDPs

Duncan Eddy, Esen Yel, Emma Passmore, Niles Egan, Grayson Armour, Dylan M. Asmar, Mykel J. Kochenderfer · 16 March 2026

Managing announced task completion times is a fundamental control problem in project management. While extensive research exists on estimating task durations and task scheduling, the problem of when and how to update completion times communicated to stakeholders remains understudied. Organizations m…

• Scalable Knee-Point Guided Activity Group Selection in Multi-Tree Genetic Programming for Dynamic Multi-Mode Project Scheduling

Yuan Tian, Yi Mei, Mengjie Zhang · 22 January 2026

The dynamic multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem is a challenging scheduling problem that requires making decisions on both the execution order of activities and their corresponding execution modes. Genetic programming has been widely applied as a hyper-heuristic to evolve prio…

• Resource-constrained Project Scheduling with Time-of-Use Energy Tariffs and Machine States: A Logic-based Benders Decomposition Approach

  Corentin Juvigny, Anton\'in Nov\'ak, Jan Mand\'ik, Zden\v{e}k Hanz\'alek · 13 January 2026

In this paper, we investigate the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) with time-of-use energy tariffs (TOU) and machine states, a variant of RCPSP for production scheduling where energy price is part of the criteria and one machine is highly energy-demanding and can be in one of …

• Cost Optimization in Production Line Using Genetic Algorithm

  Alireza Rezaee · 5 January 2026

This paper presents a genetic algorithm (GA) approach to cost-optimal task scheduling in a production line. The system consists of a set of serial processing tasks, each with a given duration, unit execution cost, and precedence constraints, which must be assigned to an unlimited number of stations …

• Resource-Based Time and Cost Prediction in Project Networks: From Statistical Modeling to Graph Neural Networks

Reza Mirjalili, Behrad Braghi, Shahram Shadrokh Sikari · 20 November 2025

Accurate prediction of project duration and cost remains one of the most challenging aspects of project management, particularly in resource-constrained and interdependent task networks. Traditional analytical techniques such as the Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Techni…

• Learning to Solve Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problems with Duration Uncertainty using Graph Neural Networks

Guillaume Infantes, St\'ephanie Roussel, Antoine Jacquet, Emmanuel Benazera · 18 November 2025

The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) is a classical scheduling problem that has received significant attention due to of its numerous applications in industry. However, in practice, task durations are subject to uncertainty that must be considered in order to propose resilient…

• An approach of deep reinforcement learning for maximizing the net present value of stochastic projects

Wei Xu, Fan Yang, Qinyuan Cui, Zhi Chen · 18 November 2025

This paper investigates a project with stochastic activity durations and cash flows under discrete scenarios, where activities must satisfy precedence constraints generating cash inflows and outflows. The objective is to maximize expected net present value (NPV) by accelerating inflows and deferring…
